A single defined outcome with a single proof. The unit of work the civilization is built from — reviewed, verified, paid.
Work, declared before it is done
Every undertaking in Rebirth publishes its outcome, its acceptance test and its reward in advance. Everything a citizen holds traces back to one of these, and can be inspected by anyone.
Undertakings open at Milestone 2. Until then the shapes below are specification, not availability.
Five shapes, one machinery
They differ in horizon and in who carries them, never in whether the proof is required.
Mission
A chain of quests with a shared objective and usually a shared crew. Missions carry a named steward answerable for delivery.
Challenge
An open problem posted to the whole civilization. Anyone may attempt it; the record shows every attempt, not only the winning one.
Trial
A test of competence rather than a piece of work. Trials gate verification rights and stewardship. They can be failed, and failing is recorded.
Expedition
A civilization-scale undertaking spanning territories — a whole layer of the registry moved forward at once.
Six stages from claim to record
Proof is the currency of this civilization. Everything else is denominated in it.
- Declaration
The undertaking states its outcome, its acceptance test and its reward before anyone accepts it. No moving the target afterwards.
- Submission
The citizen submits evidence: artefacts, measurements, witnesses, or a working thing that can be inspected.
- Review
Verification is performed by citizens holding standing in the relevant territory, and by intelligence where the check is mechanical.
- Strength
Proof is scored, not merely accepted. Weak evidence yields a weak advance; strong evidence yields a strong one.
- Settlement
XP lands in the specific tracks the work belongs to. REB, where the undertaking carried it, settles to the wallet.
- Reversal
If proof is later falsified, the advance is reversed and the integrity score records that it happened.
Five returns, kept separate
A single undertaking can pay in several of these at once — and never merges them into one number.
- Track XP
- Only in the tracks the work actually exercised.
- Territory standing
- Held where the work served, not globally.
- REB
- Where the undertaking was funded. Many are not.
- Unlocks
- Access to work, tools, worlds or authority previously closed.
- Record
- A permanent line in the history of the civilization.
Honestly: none of this is running yet
The machinery is specified and registered. It becomes real when the founding register opens.
